Preps editor -- The Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger/Hattiesburg American

Ready for big-time high school athletics? We are looking for a seasoned hand to lead our high school sports coverage at The Clarion-Ledger and the Hattiesburg American. We cover some of the top football, basketball, baseball and track prospects in the country. High school sports is big news here.

We want someone who strives to tell more than the same old bat-and-ball game stories. Our ideal candidate loves telling stories that matter to readers and being a beat authority. Between the two sites, we cover nearly the entire state of Mississippi. Candidates should have experience managing stringers and coordinating high school sports coverage. Candidates need a keen eye for enterprise and unique stories. We push digital storytelling, so a comfort in that area is preferred. Position includes copy editing and non-layout desk work responsibilities. Position is located in Jackson, the state capitol of Mississippi. We are about 2 1/2 hours north of New Orleans and about the same distance south of Memphis.

How much writing is involved here?

 

The concentration would be on features, news (recruiting and coaching moves, for example), columns and the big games (e.g. state championships). By and large, we will assign staff to most of the live event coverage. A decent amount of the editor's focus needs to go toward coordination between the sites and our digital products.
