My gut tells me that waiting five days was meant to give time to scrub the story, and any possibility you could find out anything about the cop by doing a Google search.

There would be no day to do it when everyone said, "Oh, fine." But the cops' actions don't speak of an organization that is NOT trying to hide something.

And that's the point of releasing the video now. "See, it could have happened!" Of course, given the Ferguson PD's militaristic response to protests, it's also plausible that the department viewed itself as an occupying force on its own tax-paying citizens, with the goal first, no matter, what it took, to make sure they learned that they are meant to be under the police's thumb.

Should have shot his ass, too.

I've always thought that was far and away the leading possibility for the delay. Doesn't make sense to say you're going to do it Tuesday, then delay it, then give the name. If you aren't going to make it public at all because that's policy, OK, but why a five-day wait?

Or it could have been meant to get more facts, to check into the officer's background and maybe Brown's, too, to get the video and go over it to make sure it showed what it seemed to show, etc., before going public and saying something that turned out to be wrong down the road.

I really don't know very much about this story, such as who knew what when, how long they've had this video, etc., etc. But it's not always a good idea to reach a conclusion based on "my gut" and little else.

    This is just wrong.

If you agree with that narrative, there are no longer any constitutional rights to be free from cruel and unusual punishment and having your civil rights violated.

Deadly force is only allowed when you reasonably believe that your life (or someone else's) is in danger. 35 feet away with hands raised and unarmed does not justify use of continued deadly force.

I've tried to keep an open mind from Day 1 because I've seen too many people jump to erroneous conclusions and form opinions based more on personal bias than tangible information.

It's bad habit of this board.

I still need to know more about what transpired on the street. I could definitely see a cop barking at two kids to get off the street and onto the sidewalk, though my gut told me there was more to that during the initial contact for it to escalate to a shooting.

After seeing the video I'm inclined to believe the contact between the officer and the kids didn't go down as it was first portrayed by Johnson.

However, in no way am I going to conclude the shooting was justified simply because the officer was supposedly looking for the suspect(s) of a strong-arm robbery.

Don't have enough information yet. Hope that part becomes clearer in the coming days.

I do find it nauseating, however, to see people today sayingthe video/stills are irrelevant to the incident and continuing to state with certainty the young man was "executed."

Sadly, this is what passes for objective media analysis. And this is what narrative is all about. Set up the template and stick to it, regardless of the facts.

Now the Ferguson chief is saying the robbery and the shooting aren't related because the cop wouldn't have known there was a robbery. So why release that video, except for some ham-handed attempt to smear the victim?

Chief also confirmed cop who shot didn't write his own incident report. This might be America's dumbest police force.

Yep BINGO! The (alleged) robbery was irrelevant then. No one is thinking this through before releasing information, or whoever is doing so is not doing a good job.

How would Andy Griffith had done it?
