I had the same issue with "The Dark Knight Rises." The sound was also horrible. You couldn't understand half of what Bane said.

Good point. That was a drawback for me, but not enough to dislike the movie.

I am such a Del Toro fan that I set myself up for disappointment.
'Cronos,' 'The Devil's Backbone' and 'Pan's Labyrinth' are such genius that my expectations are always ridiculously high when I see his movies.

I've probably told this story before, but it holds true to a lot of movies I've seen lately. George Lucas once said that part of the reason he made the opening battle take place on the ice planet of Hoth in "Empire Strikes Back" was to show he could achieve the same quality visual effects in a brightly lit scene as he did throughout the space battles of "Star Wars." He said a director can hide too many flaws in a darkly lit scene.

I thought of that statement while watching "Pacific Rim," though, as MPC noted, it wasn't enough to stop me from enjoying the movie.

Are some of you who are talking about dark screens referring to 3D versions? I have heard that tends to make the screen a bit darker.

I was just watching it on a regular premium channel (HBO or Cinemax) and had the same issue with it being dark. I adjusted my screen settings a little and it was OK, but I agree that it could've used a little brightening up.

Pacific Rim was awesome. Yeah, maybe dark, but damn was it a blast to watch.

  10. Guardians of the Galaxy .. appropriate for kids: 1st and 3rd grade? They liked the Avengers and Iron Man movies.

A few words in it you might not want them to hear, especially the first grader. Otherwise, if they have seen Avengers and Iron Man, I think Guardians is fine for them.

Recorded two movies that were making their pay cable debut last night -- Saving Mr. Banks and 12 Years a Slave.

Watched Saving Mr. Banks and enjoyed it quite a bit. Seemed to rely a bit too heavily on flashbacks to her childhood, though, which slowed it down a bit. Great cast.
