Doubt it ... It's a prisoner's dilemma ... If you're lying, and you know the security of your position depends on others lying, and they know that you know that they know ...

Saw this from a couple of places on Twitter, Goodell's comments during the Saints Bountygate fiasco, talking about Sean Payton ...

    "Ignorance is not an excuse"
"If he didn't know he should have"

Wonder if he thinks these statements should apply to his leadership in this case?

No way someone with some true "gravitas" becomes the next commish; whatever the fallout, this is about Goodell mismanaging the crisis and being reckless (or lying) but has nothing to do with the health of the league. As they say elsewhere, "this too shall pass." Meanwhile the gravy train is going to just keep on flowing.

Public outrage is worth something (I'm glad) but its not going to motivate the owners to appoint someone truly independent (Fay Vincent type) who can bit the owners in the a**; that would be financially imprudent.

As much as I want the NFL to change, this is not on the scale of the strike of 1994; the fans are going to still be there for the NFL.

Really hard to see Goodell holding the job, his reputation is gone and the players are not going to trust him. Next up is someone seemingly an "outsider" but really someone who is going to continue to be the owners' spokesperson. Maybe a non-threatening minority owner; Selig-type, or some legal type, former appeals court judge (Alan Page but doubt he will ever screw the players); but in any event its going to be someone who knows where their bread is buttered.

If the Ravens PR department ran the world:

"Blacks apologize for their role in slavery"
"Jews apologize for their role in the holocaust"
"Declan Sullivan apologizes for his role in disturbing football practice"

Perhaps they were job-sharing with USC after the tale of the player saving his drowning cousin?

A Steelers fan reminded me about this reaction from Ray Rice when Hines Ward was facing a DUI charge (which was later dropped) a while back.

"People look up to you, Hines," Rice said. "You just were on TV with Dancing with the Stars. Ravens fans were upset that you won Dancing with the Stars but they still watched you. That shows your charisma and character. You've got a legacy in the NFL that no one can take away from you. But if you hurt somebody drunk driving, that takes away a lot."

I don't remember why the charges were dropped and I certainly don't agree with everything Hines Ward has said and done, but I'm guessing he remembers those comments very vividly in light of the position Rice has put himself in.

By the way, Steelers cornerback William Gay's name should come up if they deal with this during the Thursday night broadcast. Gay's mother was murdered by his stepfather when he was seven years old. He said he plans to reach out to Rice.

“I’m going to reach out [to Rice]," Gay said. "I love trying to prevent domestic violence. I’m going to reach out in any type of way just to give him a talk and let him know on my end, how it hurt me, how it changed my life.”

Here is the Post-Gazette's story on Steelers reaction to the Rice incident.
