I've got to wonder if the laid-off employees thought they shouldn't have a lot to fear, Matt.

I said for the most part. Don't know everyone's situation, but I've honestly thoroughly enjoyed the past 2+ years working at Gannett. It's been an incredible opportunity that's really helped advance my career that I'll always be grateful for.

    Exactly what I was thinking.

If you want long-term job security, don't work for a newspaper.

If you go into my past posts, it's clear I'm not happy where I am. But I chose it over a higher-paying Gannett job for the "job security" alone.

This is a strong point. Probably not fair for me to single out the Tennesseean. They're merely the most recent example. That said, if sports writing is what you want to do, it'd be better to be here than at a weekly paper. Just treat it as a stepping stone job.

    That, too, is true.

If it goes for one-hundred BEEEL-YUN dollars, I'm in!

I can vouch for this right here. Did know and still know both of them and they're great people and great writers alike. Honestly, it was firings like this that made me glad I actually joined the Army rather than stay in the newspaper business.
