More cutbacks coming at the Tampa Bay Times?

Photojournalist Melissa Lyttle announced on Twitter this afternoon that she is also taking a buyout. She was part of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning story "The Girl in the Window"

Thought about something else today: college coverage, specifically UF.

The Tribune has used Florida Today and AP copy for its Gators coverage for years. Wonder if the Times would consider doing the same? They stopped covering FSU full-time awhile back. Rays, Bucs and Lightning writer Matt Baker covers major stories and games now and the rest is usually filled by Orlando Sentinel or AP.

The only program that really makes sense to have an in-house reporter -- especially in their current situation -- is South Florida. They have two covering there now -- Joey Knight and Jeff Odom.

I just don't think it's worth the trip up anymore. College fans want more dynamic coverage than the occasional gamer and notebook provide. The recruiting Web sites fit the bill -- around the clock borderline-sycophantic coverage balanced by the nutball critics on the message boards.

Reading the resumes of the people who are leaving -- what is left? Is it worth buying the paper?

A depleted Tampa Bay Times is still better than most papers in America. But it's not the great product it once was. Which is the real lesson here: No one is immune in today's media environment.

As of today, she no longer does. She and a longtime editorial writer took a buyout, it was announced.

Sad to hear. That was one of those interesting quirks for those who worked there. At least Susan Sarandon's brother is still there, last I heard.

Indeed, Terry Tomalin is still the outdoors/fitness editor, but I I do wonder if that position is now a luxury in the current circumstances.

For what it's worth, employees are now publicly expressing doubt about the survival prospects of the paper. Of course, newsies are always pessimistic ... what's odd is hearing it from the notoriously, legendarily confident Times newsies.

Didn't the sibling of a celebrity have the power boat/sailing/Gulf of Mexico recreation beat at one time?

That always stuck in my head as one helluva awesome gig.

JayFarrar, Terry Tomalin is Susan Sarandon's brother, he's been the outdoors editor there forever. Any fun/outrageous/dangerous outdoorsman trip you can think of taking around Florida, on land or sea, he has done and written about it. He's also the fishing insider for VisitFlorida.com, the state's official tourism marketing company, which has tossed freelance bones at many current and former Times folks (me included).

Great guy to have a beer with too. But he hasn't seen any of his sister's movies in which she is naked or dies.

    A shame.

I don't know all the politics of every bloodletting at every paper, but, sometimes, big names leave not solely because they were being shown the door, but the prospect of upcoming bullshit wasn't worth the paycheck.
