We're hiring in Athens, Ga. and looking to move quickly. There would be freedom to write as well, but design is top priority.

    Here's the ad.

The award-winning Athens Banner-Herald is seeking a full-time page designer/copy editor who can build well-organized pages and juggle headline and editing tasks in a fast-paced newsroom. The successful candidate must be comfortable designing the front page as well as a variety of sections including news, lifestyle, business, sports and a weekly entertainment tabloid.

The candidate must be able to work collaboratively with the Vice President of Audience, Director of Content, other designers, photographers and reporters for the daily newspaper. Strong copy editing and headline writing skills are a necessity, along with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Knowledge of InDesign is required, and the candidate must be proficient in Photoshop. Illustrator is a huge plus. Knowledge of AP style and the ability to proof pages is necessary. The designer must be able to articulate reasons for design decisions and take initiative.

This position includes evenings and weekend work. At least two years experience in newspaper publication design is necessary, and recent college graduates with proven ability, solid references and strong portfolios will be considered.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé and a link to design samples to Ed Morales at ed.morales@onlineathens.com with "Page Designer" in the subject line.

The Athens Banner-Herald is owned by Morris Communications, and offers growth opportunities for advancement and extensive benefits package, including: medical coverage, dental coverage, vision, flexible spending accounts, life insurance coverage, short and long-term disability income protection programs and a 401(K) retirement savings account.

Will it do news and sports?

News and sports. If someone is proficient with sports, they'd do it two or three times per week.

The staff looks a lot different from what it was when I worked there, especially in sports. Most of the newsroom is completely different - which may say something in itself - so I can't really comment on what it is like to work there anymore. But I can say that Athens is a great town to work in. Plenty to do, great live music, good food and close enough to Atlanta that a night in the big city isn't a total hassle.

It is a college town, so obviously you'll have the youngans running around acting foolish and whatnot. The office is located right in downtown, so you will have a front-row seat for some shenanigans, if you are into that people-watching thing.

To the person who gets this job, get to know the bartenders at the Taco Stand well. If they like you, they'll usually serve you past 2 a.m. Very helpful after a long Friday or Saturday night working tight football deadlines.
