The Dallas Morning News is seeking freelance writers who can keep stats, track play-by-play and write game stories as part of the most comprehensive high school football coverage in the country.

Freelancers will be needed for games located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Thursday, Friday or Saturdays during August through December. They should be comfortable with multi-tasking during game action. This means being able to update our live play-by-play system online without missing a beat with what’s going on on the field.

After the game, freelancers should feel comfortable submitting an accurate, straight-forward game story with proper grammar and spelling.

Training will be provided before the season begins to acquaint freelancers with the online play-by-play system, but once the season starts they will be expected to be self-sufficient. Equipment will be provided.

    Previous sports journalism experience preferred.

Please send resume, cover letter and optional writing samples to Digital High School Sports Editor Avi Zaleon at azaleon@dallasnews.com.

I think the past few years they've been covering with live stats about 50 games per week. Some other games are covered the old-fashioned way, with three graphs and a boxscore.

Does anybody know how much they typically pay stringers at the DMN?

Two seasons ago, I believe we got $75 per game for live stats and three to four paragraphs of recap.

The DMN has paid $55 for a few graphs and a box for the last 15 years.

If you do 10 or fewer games a year, you won't get a 1099 from them. Of course, nowadays the regular season is 11 weeks and the playoffs can go for six more.
