I remember talking to Jermaine Dye shortly after he left Oakland, about their hitting philosophy in the organization. He said that was it: deep counts. Don't worry about striking out. Just see a lot of pitches, if possible. That was essentially how the "Moneyball"/sabermetrics approach was distilled down to the players there.

It was AGAINST the Rays. Jackson was drafted by the Rays but was with Arizona at the time. And he walked 8 guys. One of the ugliest no-nos ever. And the Rays would have been no-hit for the sixth time (inc. 3 perfect games) in 16-plus years had Carrasco finished it off.

"Two of our runners almost managed to get to first base and we did hit 17 foul balls!"

No worries, I just remember that well because Edwin sucked most of the time and then he stuck it to his former team with that disgusting no-hitter.

So in looking at the standings, if the season ended today the Cubs would be the second wild card. That would mean that all five NL Central teams would have made the post-season in the last five seasons.

That made me look a little more closely at things, and it dawns on me that we are now in an age where nearly every team has reached the post-season within the last 10 years. Yes, the wild-card playoff does let in two more teams, but it certainly can be said that baseball is in a Golden Age of competitive balance.

Pssst. The season doesn't end today. :) But I agree that it's a good time to be a baseball fan. Unless you are a Phillies fan.

Well, I would have to say I've enjoyed watching the Phillies the last four nights. ;) But now I'm worried about the Brewers screwing up their draft positioning for next June.

Well, I haven't enjoyed watching the Cubs the last few nights. Since I'm a Mets fan. Ugh!

That Mets fans didn't enjoy the series against the Cubs? I figured that one out on my own, JC.

    :)
