The Oklahoman seeks a designer/graphic artist who will create bold sports section fronts, full of energy and emotion.

The Oklahoman produces a consistent Top 10 Associated Press Sports Editors section and website in one of the nation’s most energetic NBA and college sports markets.

We have a highly motivated sports staff with high standards and a strong connection to each other and our community.

We work in a vibrant, multimedia newsroom located in the heart of Oklahoma City, one of the nation’s top merging mid-sized cities.

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Produce engaging infographics and illustrations. Lead and contribute to award-winning special sections and projects for print and digital.
    • Work collaboratively with reporters, assigning editors, other designers and artists, photographers and web producers.
    • Have experience with and/or a yearning to learn web design and interactive tools that best display our content digitally.

Strong copy editing skills, news judgment, a command of typographic and design principles are a must.

The ideal candidate will be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite applications (primarily InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator).

The Oklahoman fosters a diverse, collaborative work environment and offers competitive pay and benefits. This position works evenings and weekends.

Applicants can send send a résumé, cover letter and clips to sports editor Mike Sherman at msherman@oklahoman.com

Nicest sports staff in America and a shop that does absolutely fantastic work both in print and online.

Highest recommendation, plus OKC is a great city.

P.S. If you get an in-person interview, hold out for Cattlemen's.

Kevin Durant and his mom dislike The Oklahoman because of one headline in 2014.

So, having a spine is required at this shop because an athlete, who could be gone in 12 months, is grumpy at the paper.

    The subhead was the problem.

I'm more bothered by the "scoreboard" graphic at the top of the package.

Use it for the score of the game, not how the series stands in games won for each team (which I guess they did on actual game nights). After all, there are spaces for three numbers for each team. Is it a best-of-1,997 series?

Had this same job out of college. Can't say enough good things about Mike Sherman and his staff. Enjoyed my time there.
