Hey, look over there, it's the Feds!

Meanwhile, federal authorities in the United States said Wednesday they are poised to assist officials in Zimbabwe in their investigation of Palmer and the two men who were with him when Cecil was shot with a bow and arrow and then finished off with a gunshot.

Laury Marshall Parramore, spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said her agency is deeply concerned about the recent killing of Cecil the lion. “We are currently gathering facts about the issue and will assist Zimbabwe officials in whatever manner requested. It is up to all of us -- not just the people of Africa -- to ensure that healthy, wild populations of animals continue to roam the savanna for generations to come.”

The U.S. Justice Department said in a statement that it’s also “aware of the situation and … looking into the facts.”

Alma, I don't think it's the same thing. Someone had said something about the killing of any living thing for sport being offensive. I don't think that they mean that, when you draw it to its conclusion. There's something about a mammal.

I'd rather have the entire Internet after me than the feds.

Incorrect. It was initially shot with a crossbow, but killed with gunshots. Cecil survived (and suffered) for 40 hours with the arrow inside of him, until these assholes found him again and finished him off with the gun.

Dick Cheney thinks the dentist is an amateur for not putting an arrow in his guide's face.

It depends on the nature of the felony, the length of the possible sentence and the state of conviction. Federal law only prohibits possession if the minimum term was a year. Some states - like mine - have felonies that are punishable by less than a year, which is contrary to the old common law definition of a felony.

Also, many states have a procedure for restoration of civil rights - including gun rights - after the sentence has been served. If a state restores an individual's civil rights, the federal ban no longer applies to them. Finally, some states bans only cover handguns, others only last while the sentence is being served if it was non-violent.

My apologies. I've not really followed the story that closely.

Being an unethical hunter is bad enough. Being a poor shot, like this guy, and unable to deliver a clean kill makes it even worse.

Of all the stupid shit Hemingway inspired lesser men to try in an attempt to boost their dwindling erections, shooting big game is high on the list. Day drinking is such a better way to deal with your boner woes, dentists of the world.

The lying, asshole poacher is supposed to be highly-skilled and experienced :

In a 2009 article on big-game hunting, the New York Times reported that Palmer killed a near-record sized elk with a bow and arrow in Northern California.

Palmer told the Times that he can hit a playing card from 100 yards with his compound bow and he eschews bringing a firearm on hunting trips as a backup.
