Through the years, some folks at Ohio newspapers have suggested doing occasional update-type stories on the mountain, but the photo editors did their best to nix those story ideas, saying that McKinley hadn't ever actually visited Alaska, so it wasn't really local. They also were reluctant to run the National Parks Service photos of the mountain instead of staff-produced images.

And so, any interest that folks in Ohio had in the mountain's name began to fade, and most of them channeled their energy into that "First if Flight!" rivalry with North Carolina.

Very few realize that the state's first step toward obscurity is Denali.

Glad that people in Ohio get to express their opinons. The people in the Phillipines say, "Fuck McKinley!"

    I thought he said Conservatives.

And, as dumb as being against this because you're from Ohio is, I think we should exclude elected officials from Ohio from this conversation. The opposition to this from elected officials from Ohio has been longstanding.

What a dumb issue for Republicans to be hitching their wagon to. Just to reiterate: McKinley never set foot in Alaska and had no connection whatsoever to anything there. Nobody in Alaska wanted it to have that name, and most there have refused to acknowledge it and continued to call it Denali for the last century anyways. And, frankly, it's not like McKinley was some great president in need of a mountain named after him, the only thing most remember him for is getting assassinated.

The thing never should've been renamed Mt. McKinley to begin with. This is merely fixing that past mistake.

If the guy who named it was a Democrat, we'd be talking about Mount Bryan now.
