Sports Reporter, Escanaba Daily Press (Mich.)

The Escanaba Daily Press (www.dailypress.net), located in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is looking for a full time (37.5 hours/week) sports writer. We are a daily newspaper (Monday-Saturday) in the Ogden Newspaper group.
This position requires excellent writing skills. A background in journalism or public relations is preferred. You will cover a wide variety of high school and community sporting events. Photography, social media, and pagination skills are a plus, but can also train.

Esky is my birthtown (never lived there, grew up in Marquette) and I worked in the chain for 2 years nearly a decade and a half ago. So I can answer some questions about the area.
Escanaba has a decent football team. Gladstone softball is quite good and I believe their Little League softball just played in the LLWS of softball.
But it's the essence of a small town. Not a lot around except woods and a few chain places to eat. But some great small town cafes and Bell's Brewery made a new brewery there (Upper Hand), plus there is some great craft beer in the U.P. and Wisconsin. There is a casino right down the road that gets a lot of older acts.
And yes, people have a "Fargo-like" accent. You'll get used to it.
About 90 minutes from Green Bay and about 6-7 hours from Detroit. Marquette is "the big city" (about 60 miles away) and that's only a population of about 16,000.

 

What spikechiquet said basically. Gladstone softball has won three straight championships, the last one in 2014. We also have Powers North Central basketball, which just won a Class D state title, an Escanaba Little League team that just finished runners-up in the Little League World Series, a Rapid River football team that has been state runner-up twice in the last four years, and plenty more teams that frequently get to the regional and quarterfinal level of state competition. We also have an off road track nearby that serves as one of the stops on the TORC circuit, and multiple prestiguous fishing tournaments, including the Cabela's National Team Championship in 2016. The Bays de Noc in the area was recently selected one of the top three fisheries in the world for walleye fishing.

 

As someone who used to live and work in Manistique (and occasionally shop in Escanaba, seeing all the "shop local" Manistique civic leaders at Esky big box stores), this is a good opportunity for someone starting out in the biz who loves the outdoors. The U.P. is hunting and fishing paradise.

The only downer is if you're a Bears fan ...
