It's done that for the vast majority of recent history.

He's not my problem anymore. If the moderators don't care, fuck it.

The "moderators" are adult enough to ignore an anonymous person on a message board. ... or keep perspective when we think someone is acting like a douche. ... WITHOUT being as big of a douche. Maybe someday you will figure that out, too. Or you can keep making every problem you have with someone else on here about the moderators and their lack of caring. That works, too.

    A few things:

    1) People are complaining about Dick being offensive on the thread. There are some people who complain (not just about this thread) and assume that we see reported posts right when they hit the complaint button. And then get bent out of shape if there isn't an immediate response. Typically one of us doesn't see it until much later (we are not on here when you are upset!) -- if one of us even comes on and the first thing we do is look at complaints. Report stuff, by all means. We actually do see stuff we might not have -- when people are ruining threads with back and forth insults, for example. But then let it go. We may not get to it right away or if we do, we may not see it the same way you do.

    2) Maybe Jeff feels differently. It is his board. But as offensive and downright moronic as I PERSONALLY have felt some of the posts on this thread have been, I also think that if everyone acts like an adult, it takes care of itself. People can decide for themselves when someone is acting like a jerk, and as long as others don't act like jerks too, my feeling is that people (at least the ones whose opinions I would care about) see people for who and what they are on here. If you think someone is acting like a douche or is being offensive, why not let them hang themselves with their posts? There are people on here who get upset by the content of what others post, and expect us to rush in like the goon censorship squad (often over something others might not find bad at all). In this case, yeah, a lot of people have found some of the posts dumb and / or offensive -- me included. What is so hard about just IGNORING the person. ... or responding, saying, "You know what, you are acting like a jerk," the way some people on this thread have? Chalking it up to who you are dealing with and moving on to people you care more about on here.

    3) Two things about the moderating: a) We are not on here all of the time. We don't see everything and lord over the board. I can't say that enough. b) For my part, I am not deleting posts based on the CONTENT of what people say, offensive (such as on this thread) or otherwise. I didn't sign up to be the board censor -- at least to that degree. Maybe Jeff or Moddy or the other moderators feel differently. It's Jeff's board, and as far as I am concerned Moddy has earned the right to exercise that judgment. But I only delete posts and ask people to stop when they join in and act like just as big jerks, because they didn't like the content of someone else's posts. Some people refuse to see the difference. They assume they are so right about everything that it's NEVER THEM. The other guy started it ... and hell or high water, they are going to win the message board! To the point where they make themselves a problem.

If you think someone is being a jerk or is offensive, respond reasonably (perfect post, in my estimation, dixiehack!). ... or if you can't, LEAVE THE PERSON HANGING. If you are right about them or how douchy their posts are, OTHERS (at least the people you care about) see them for what they are, too. Get on with your life and stop wasting so much energy on a person a message board if you can't respond with reason and perspective. For the most part, people have been really reasonable on this thread. Which is why from where I sit, there isn't a moderating issue.

    Hmm.

I knew a guy who worked someplace sketchy. But he wouldn't leave because his gf was in the same area and liked her job.

He used to share stories about morons in his workplace. Eventually one of them would go too far -- arguing incessantly about the same thing for the 49th time; making the same types of egregious errors; etc. Sometimes the consequences were extreme. Sometimes not.

The guy's response was generally the same: "If you're not going to be shown the door for THAT, then what?"

I think of that statement today.

I've had plenty of run-ins with DW, and he does bring a lot of this on himself. But he is one of the most interesting posters on this board. Given that those are in short supply around here, the last thing we need is for someone like him to be run off because a few attention-starved posters want to grandstand.

I love that Dick -- a Democrat -- is using a naughty word to make a point, and it's causing a bunch of fellow Dems to wet their pants.

It makes as much sense as Bodie thinking that All in the Family was a racist TV show.

I don't understand why people want him to be banned. That's silly.

To successfully pull off what he's trying, you better be a past master of sarcasm, operating in a hall-of-fame, Randy Newman-singing-Rednecks zone. That's not happening here.

I like Dick. Bit of a cuckoo bird at times, though we all are, but this place is better off WITH him and his post stylings. As for his effort in this thread ... at some point it would have been nice if he just cut through the vague questions and posted a Ragu'ian 10,000-word idea about his truest feelings on the subject. Seems like he just wanted everyone else to work for something, but what I don't know.

That said, I enjoy his presence here. And any YF reference to Bodie is a funny YF reference to Bodie.

He certainly should not be banned. Don't think anybody other than perhaps riptide suggested that. But he should stop acting like a douche.

This game where one rants offensive shit on the premise that it's what the other guy is supposedly thinking is just a lazy lame debate tactic. It's one dick and starman love to play and they just come off looking foolish each time. And when it includes the constant and repetitive use of the word nigger--and not just in this thread but quite a few others in past months--it can get plain offensive too.

I guess he thinks he's being provocative, but really he's just making an ass of himself. There's no shock value on this end, instead just eye rolls at dick playing his dumb N-word game again. And, frankly, he does it soo often that one begins to wonder if he simply enjoys saying the word.

Starman actually thinks we sit round calling African-Americans the "N" word all day long.

Dick wants you to think about what you are saying. He wants you to look beyond a simple answer. He's pointing out that some of these simple answers are more racist than the people giving them realize.
