All great points. I agree on Serena if the calendar slam had been achieved.

I think it's purely because of the recency factor. In this short-attention span era, people always exaggerate the significance of whatever title came most recently. I remember when we had this discussion in another thread this summer, people kept mentioning the women's soccer team because they'd just won about a week before. And if someone had started the discussion in June it would've been the Warriors getting nominated, and if in February it would've been the Pats (well, maybe not the Pats, since they're evil and all ...but you get the idea).

The Royals sentiment will soon fade. Thankfully. The "entire team" choices are dumb.

It has to be Curry at this point, right? MVP, Finals champ, leading first 20-0 team in nba history. Who can compare with that?

The horse that won the Triple Crown.

    It's just a horse.

I'd think this debate has been silenced by what Curry has done to start this season. Dude has just been otherworldly great and has genuinely changed the way the NBA game is played by playing his position in a way nobody else has really ever played it. It's got to be Curry.

And I don't want to hear any more about the goddamned horse. It's sportsman of the year ...which I'd think implies a human being requirement ..not sports-critter of the year.

FWIW, Stoney, I heard Good Morning America's weekend edition call it SI's Athlete of the Year last weekend. Could just be a mistake, but were they trying to avoid speciesism?

  10. Sports Critter of the Year sounds like something Outdoor Life or Field and Stream would do.

I'm also imagining South Parks Uncle Jimbo and Ned thinning the herds.

If it's sports critter of the year, it's either a white-tail deer or a largemouth bass. None of those stupid Animal Planet varmints.
