It's perfectly OK to say or write that Jeb's demise puts Rubio in a better position. It's insane to say he's in a better position than Trump.

 

Maybe not shenanigans per se, but Dukakis and the military helmet and Dean's scream comes to mind as stuff that's, when you think about it, are pretty stupid reasons not to vote for them, but yet was very effective in hurting their campaigns.

 

That's different. Those were things the candidate did that reinforced negative images of them. Rick is talking about the usual idiocy perpetrated (or not perpetrated but charged) conducted by lower levels of a campaign. I mean, if all you went by was Twitter, you wouldn't vote for any candidate, you'd leave the country, as all the supporters of all of them would seem to be nasty fools.

 

I think Rubio can hold a plurality among just those three. I'm not close to 100% sure, but I think so.

 

It didn't lose him the election but Watergate comes to mind as low-level blowback.

But can he get to the delegate number when he's starting from behind?

We don't have a template for how a race goes when A) a true outsider takes command; and B) the nomination can be won without ever reaching 50 percent in any state.

 

Right now, Rubio isn't that far behind. He'll have to start winning after Super Tuesday, and hope Kasich drops out sooner rather than later.

There is a point of no return, but it isn't three states in. And it probably isn't Super Tuesday. If Rubio picks up a high percentage of Bush and eventually Kasich voters, those plurality-take-alls start to work for him.

 

Maybe, but by then Trump could have Alabama, Georgia and Michigan among some other hefty delegate states. He is way, way ahead at last word in all of those places.
