Bush did have a 90 percent approval rating after 9/11 and had an approval rating over 50 percent among Democrats when he first went to war in Iraq. Democrats were willing to give him a chance.

Republicans, meanwhile, held secret meetings the night of Obama's inauguration.

I love how this "seal the nomination bounce" has been created in this cycle to account for Hillary's bad polling.

We're talking about Trump's ex-butler. That movie is irrelevant.
What do you want me to say? "Well, if both sides do it, it's OK."?

"They do it too" is not a valid defense.

How many of those Democrats also decried Bush from the get-go as an "illegitimate president" because of the contested 2000 election? Or started turning back against him at the first opportunity post-9/11? Or were as opposed to his domestic policies (which was the real key issue in the 2000 election) as current Republicans have been to Obama's?
I think a lot of them supported him after 9/11 because it was politically appropriate to do so. Once the dust settled a few months later, it was back to business as usual. And I'm guessing more than a few "secret meetings" were held by Democrat strategists during that era. It's high-level politics. There's a lot of secret meetings going on.

And as you apparently tried to ignore last time we had this conversation, we know from exit polling that a slight majority were actively hostile to Trump.

"I'm betting there were secret meetings" vs actual not-so-secret "We must oppose everything" meetings.

I know it's hard to remember so many years ago, but Ted Kennedy was a big ally to Bush on No Child Left Behind. Go look and see if you can find me a picture like this of ANY Republican with President Obama. Or how about Medicare Part D, and the perscription drug plan? 10 democratic senators voted for it. Diane Friggen Feinstien was one of them. This fantasy where Dems were "just as obstructionist" is talk radio bullshit, put forth by people who hope that 12 years is too long ago to remember anything.

Just make sure you say the same thing about the Bernie Bros who end up supporting Hillary.

    Let's assume you're 100 percent correct.

It's Sept. 11, 2009. Ten months into Obama's first term, America is victimized by another terrorist attack that leaves, oh, some 3,000 dead.

On Sept. 12 does President Obama have a 90 percent approval rating?

His approval rating from Democrats didn't fall below 48 percent for nearly a year after 9/11, not just a few months. They stopped giving him support when he was ramping up for Iraq. Even then, once the war started, they gave some support to him, with at least one 50 percent approval rating. They tried. Bush flubbed it all away.

Presidential Approval Ratings -- George W. Bush

Meanwhile, not counting his first two weeks in office, Obama has never had above a 34 percent approval rating from Republicans. His approval rating the week that Bin Laden was killed was a whole whopping 21 percent from Republicans. The next poll dropped down to 15 percent. You'd think that they would have at least given him some approval for that. Nope.

Presidential Approval Ratings -- Barack Obama

So no, Republicans have not given Obama the same treatment that Democrats gave Bush. Far from it, in fact.

After bin Laden's killing, I posted something to the effect of "congratulations on your re-election, Mr. President" on Facebook and was jumped by conservative acquaintances who thought I was taking credit away from the real heroes. Maybe if Obama announced his death in front of a 'Mission Accomplished' banner on an aircraft carrier he might have gotten more of a bump.

Not after, in his first speech, he scolded the media, blamed Republicans, refused to utter the phrase, "Islamic extremism" and then skipped every funeral.
