The Seattle Times seeks an innovative, experienced Assistant Sports Editor to manage reporters and oversee coverage on multiple platforms in one of America’s most vibrant sports cities and regions. This person must be a team player able to articulate a clear, creative vision for sports coverage. At least five years of daily newspaper or digital experience is needed. Must have good overall sports knowledge, with management experience in sports preferred. Must be a well-organized leader and a creative thinker who helps the Pacific Northwest’s largest newspaper set the agenda for regional sports coverage. Must be able to lead a team of reporters to come up with a coverage plan that includes multi-platform coverage, outside-the-box enterprise, profiles and trend stories while also integrating digital, photo/video and graphics.

Hi everyone, the job has been filled internally. Here is part of executive editor Don Shelton's newsroom announcement yesterday:

Three other moves involve the Sports team. Scott Hanson has been promoted from desk editor to assistant sports editor and will oversee college coverage and the sports desk. Assistant sports editor Ed Guzman, who has overseen college sports, will now oversee pro coverage. Sports producer Nick Eaton, who oversees digital sports, will add hunting and fishing coverage from Mark Yuasa to his responsibilities. These moves follow Paul Barrett’s recent promotion to sports editor.

Scott, a Seattle native who interned at The Seattle Times and attended Washington and Chico State, has been a Times desk editor and reporter for golf and horse racing since 2002. He previously worked at the Miami Herald, Eugene Register-Guard, Las Vegas Review-Journal and Chico Enterprise-Record. Ed, a Southern California native and Stanford graduate, has been at The Times for three years and previously worked at The Washington Post, New York Times and The Oregonian. Nick, hired in 2015, is a Seattle native and Washington State University graduate who previously was sports editor of The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and also worked at The Spokesman-Review.
