Back when I was a teenager, we'd hit BV in the afternoon, chase it down with a trip to the original Whitey's ice cream parlor, then hit Quad-City Downs for some harness racing wagering. A couple of times a year, the Downs would have quarter beer, pop and hot dog night. Not sure how I survived those.

As I tell everyone in the PNW, one thing about the Midwest is those people know how to eat!

And wash it all down with cheap beer.:)

Belgian Village followed by Whitey's? So much cholesterol -- and so delicious.

Dragged my wife into a Whitey's during my last visit to the Q-C about 10 years ago. Beforehand, she thought I was overhyping the ice cream and shakes. Afterward, she was wondering if the Whitey's people could be persuaded to open ice cream parlors in Florida.

I don't believe I've ever had a bad Reuben in my life.

Trusting that Subway made sure no one in the Fogel family has the first name Reuben/Ruben.

Then after the horse track, we'd often hit Ross' for a midnight Magic Mountain or a Volcano.

If I did half of those things now, I'd die on the spot. Things you can do as a teenager that you wouldn't dare try as an adult and all that.

My wife was the same about Whitey's. We're 1,000 miles away, but I liked them on Facebook and show her all the specials. They started carrying Little Debbie Nutty Bars for mix-ins to their shakes, and I think I saw a tear in her eye when she saw that photo.

There was a Whitey's within walking distance of our house. Mrs. Coco and I would say, "Oh, let's take the kids for a walk," and somehow those walks often ended up going past Whitey's.

Their mint chocolate chip ice cream is the best I've ever had. Put it in between two chocolate chip cookies? You had a sugar high for days!

I once had a Reuben at a place in Garden City, Kansas, called "Traditions." I bit into it and found mayonnaise on it instead of Russian. The waitress said that her customers like it that way. I sent it back and asked for a hamburger instead.

When I go there, I get it cold and with no dressing.

A Subway Reuben sandwich sounds like something that would go well with a hot pot in Yellowstone.

What would melt first, the Swiss cheese or the human?

    You sent it back?

How did the cook's spit taste ten minutes later?
