    In which he followed the advice of his rough tough military men.

    Had he actually been the limp wristed pansy assed hippie peacenik fairyboy the Reaganauts always said he was, and NOT opted for military action, the hostages would probably have been released sometime in the summer of 1980. But the blown rescue mission pissed the Iranians off and made it impossible for them to release the hostages (which they were looking for some pretext to do) without appearing to yield to military pressure, so they held them probably six months longer than they would have otherwise.

    And if the hostages are released in July or August 1980, Carter gets reelected.

    Suppose Fucko sends Ivanka to some hostile nation for some delicate and touchy (tee-hee, giggle giggle) diplomatic talks. And suppose they like her. Suppose they really like her. Suppose they REALLY REALLY like her. Suppose they decide to keep her. Then what?
