Like he's not supposed to root for his kid? Besides, it's NASCAR.

Exactly. It's NASCAR. A sport that cuddles up to neo-Confederate, gun-loving, Sandy Hook Truthers. And a sport that is so often impacted by weather that even its partisan pandering can't keep TV ratings from cratering.

Really, that was your takeway from what I wore to a game in 1998? For the record, it's a lovely jersey with a collar – just like a polo! – from the 1994 Five Nations Tournament, and I doubtless wore khakis, or at the very least "nice jeans."

Now that I think more, I could have been wearing one of my 1994 Irish World Cup jerseys; I have both a home and away (a green and white). I like to make St. Patrick's Day into a multi-day celebration. Very few nationalities have their own holiday that everyone else also recognizes, but we Irish do, and I will luxuriate in it every year that I am fortunate enough to be alive. And if Dekgrunt wants to ding me for it, I can certainly live with that. Erin go bragh.

    Ok, how about this one?

I'm in Utah working for the Salt Lake Tribune and it's a high school game. The girl from the Provo Daily Herald shows up in full BYU garb, sweatshirt, sweat pants, et al. I thought it was kind of tacky, but I didn't say anything.

Two weeks later, I have a D-League game in Orem. It's cold and I figure no one will make a deal about a Bethune-Cookman (Florida school in case you didn't know) sweatshirt. I get to the game and a player from Daytona Beach is on the other team. "WTF, I'd never thought I'd see a B-CU shirt in Utah." His team goes off, wins by 20 and I got a "that's for you Wildcat" after he hit his 3rd three. I could live with it.

Can't see anyone really have a big prob with wearing a rugby jersey to a college game. Remember seeing a beat writer wearing sweatpants at an MLB press box in the late 90s,. A rugby shirt with a pair of khakis is a lot better than sweatpants and a tee shirt.

Hey, just my opinion. I think all of those are inappropriate. When I covered a game or practice, or anyone who works for me covers a game or practice, looking professional is important to me.

I don't think Deskgrunt fully appreciates just how nice the jersey is. Check out that fine European craftsmanship, looking just as terrific as the day it was purchased 22 years ago at one of your finer London department stores. It's so classy I've even worn it to funerals. Well, Irish wakes, but still. Any press row at whatever level should be honored to be graced by this jersey.

    That is all.

Homerism has been a pretty obvious edict from management at ESPN the last few years, and it doesn't take an Awful Announcing column to see it. I started listening to the ESPN College Football Podcast years ago, when Ivan Maisel and Beano Cook hosted. Then, in the last few seasons, a guy who shoe-horned Arizona State references into everything joined Ivan. ASU Guy was replaced by someone who shoe-horned Rutgers into everything.

Yeah, that's what a national college football pod needs. Constant references to Rutgers.

I guess the idea is to make TV personalities more endearing because HEY! THEY'RE FANS JUST LIKE ME! But it also makes being a reporter more annoying, since the audience that provides feedback already accuses anything not exactly in line with their own POV to be ~BIAS~, and they struggle to differentiate between Personalities and Journalists.
