OK, I know from other threads Maryland sucks. :)

I have my family reunion in late July, Solomons MD. Never been to that part of the world. Thoughts/ideas on food/brews? Might buzz over to Fredericksburg for part of the day Saturday, want to avoid DC area as we won't have enough time to do that right.

May also spend a day or two on the way back in the Hagerstown area (my dad's side of the family lived in Washington County, MD & Berkeley Springs, VA/WV before moving to the Rust Belt). Any advice on can't miss there would also be appreciated. Likely to hit Antietam (ancestors basically lived on the battlefield and several involved in the war) but are open to suggestions.

Carl's ice cream in Fredericksburg. Was shown on PBS 20 years ago. Still great.

Schmankerl Stube Bavarian restaurant in downtown Hagerstown. Closed on Mondays. Five Stars.

    False.

Seriously, if you're going to be near Hagerstown, it's worth the 30-mile drive to go to Frederick and get dinner at Volt.

The Voltaggio brothers may be out of my price range, especially since I'm out on medical leave :)

Try Family Meal, his version of a diner. The one in Hagerstown closed, but the original in Frederick is still there. Outside of the battlefield, which is worth a trip, there's not much to do in Hagerstown and it can be depressing. Frederick is much nicer.

I live in the 'hood, so Hagerstown should be right up my alley :)

Thanks for the tip on Family Meal. Volt website appears to be down - want to at least see what I may be getting into prior to making reservations!

Chris Ballard of Sports Illustrated once did a long form piece on the baseball team from neighboring Williamsport, Md. His description of the area is thus:
After all, Brendon wasn't like most kids in Williamsport, a town of about 2,100 in the northwest corner of Maryland, just across the border from West Virginia. Hemmed in by interstates, it's a place young people dream of leaving, a town on the way to everywhere but seldom a destination.

I graduated North Hagerstown High School, and I am not sure there is a damn thing I can recommend on a day visit.

Do you mean Frederick or Fredericksburg?

Virginia Saturday...looks to be a fairly short drive from Solomon's. Have part of the day to kill, looks to be a good day trip.

Frederick, MD would be Sunday or Monday on the way home.

Sorry for any confusion. It's the Norco...

Just checking. Fredericksburg's not my favorite place. Lots of chain sprawl. The downtown is OK though, and there are a few decent breweries popping up. The traffic there is miserable.

Is there time to cancel and do virtually anything else?
