Corporate comms jobs are just as easy to get as "wills and closing" gigs.

Can you imagine getting 2 free weeks at Christmas and not be "on call" every moment of the day? Wow. Can you imagine a job where you aren't expected to work 60 to 80 and get paid for 40? And on top of all this you could be laid off any minute any day. No wonder Journalism is the pits and considered even a worst job than lumberjack on the top 200 job lists.

My turn ... two first-place awards in the state contest this year and 1,700 Twitter followers couldn't save my job.

I'm not going to dwell on the job loss (as long as the severance cashes, hahaha) ... it was clearly a corporate-driven decision, and it's their ship. My question is in the transition to PR ... what have you, those of you who have made the transition, emphasized in your cover letter?

It all depends on what type of PR job you are applying for. It's just not about writing press releases and managing social media presence. You figure out what the duties of the position are and tailor a cover letter to the job.

Well, I'm out. Higher ups made the decision for me. Good thing I got my teaching credentials last week or I'd really be up a creek.

Sorry to hear it, but at least good things seem to be ahead.

Well, I got an offer today to teach 7th grade English. Got another interview Monday and I will go from there. I think I have completely outed myself with this announcement I guess

Had a chance to join one of our local colleges as an SID. In fact, the former softball coach and Title IX compliance director really went to bat for me, telling the AD he had to take a look at me.

Turned my resume in, included two letters of recommendation that were from a previous job posting, good words from numerous people... and nothing. Not even a phone interview.

In the college's defense, the job responsibilities grew to include marketing, something where I am lacking because I've been writing for 25 years (lol). Still, it is disappointing. I feel like yelling "Don't you know who I am?" at a lot of these people, but the truth is where I'm at right now I'm less visible.

Oh well. Keep plugging away. :)

    Congratulations and good luck!

I've also considered teaching as a possible career option and soon may be seriously looking into it, assuming someone would hire an old coot like me.

When I was in 9th grade, my science teacher was a first-year teacher and she was pushing 50. In college, I knew a 55-year-old student teacher. At my Certification training, there was a 43-year-old

This last semester, I thought I was going to be the old guy in the program (I'm 33) but I was very much the median age. There were a few fresh out of bachelor's programs but there were several easily in their 40s and at least one pushing if not already 50.
