I think Trump thinks if he gives Mueller enough new things to investigate every so often, he'll never finish before Trump leaves the White House, and after that he will be dead or somewhere without an extradition treaty.

Anecdotally, Trump seems to have lost the support of the obnoxious old guys who talk way too loudly about politics at breakfast in fast food places, at least in my town. He's been downgraded to part of "I don't like any of 'em." status.

 

My favorite thing is he adds a sense of wonder to every mundane fact everyone else already knew but just now flew into his narrow cone of vision for a blip of a second. He's every really old rich person you've met who has never actually participated in society in a normal way.

 

As said many times, by many others, Trump is the biggest snowflake of them all.
