It would seem like it, but I'm not so sure. There's a way to interpret a lot of Trump's actions in which he isn't a stone-cold racist or sociopath but a crazy old man with shit for brains who, for the first time in his life, is in a position where he actually has to consider the way in which his opinions/worldview affect other people. Remember, we're talking about one of the least intellectually-curious people in the country...there's a chance that, until he became POTUS and was forced to learn about the complexity of the issue, Trump hadn't even considered the fact that there are people in this country who are technically illegal immigrants but who have only ever known America. There's a chance he hadn't even considered the possibility of a kid whose native language is English, who has only ever attended American schools, who has only ever done American things, with American friends, but who also happens to be an illegal alien because his parents brought him across the border from a country he does not remember when he was an infant.

Trump's a one-step thinker. He thinks about a Mexican lady cleaning rooms in his hotels, but he does not think about her infant child and what life is going to be like for him/her in 18 years when he's a high school senior and fully assimilated into American society/culture. There's a chance Trump didn't even know what the Dream Act was before he took office.

There's a chance Trump's views on immigration went like this: he knew he hired Mexicans in his hotels because his competitors hired Mexicans, because Mexicans worked the cheapest, and thus enabled hoteliers to offer customers the lowest possible prices, which Trump needed to match in order to compete for business. And he knew that, if there weren't as many Mexicans in America, both he and his competitors would be hiring Americans, and paying them more money. Anything else he knew about Mexicans and the issue in general he learned from Fox News.

All that is to say that I wouldn't be surprised if Trump fully understands how fucked up it would be to send many of these people back to their "native" countries. Maybe he only cares because he desperately wants people to like him, and because he knows that most normal people would agree that letting these kids stay is the right thing to do. But his actions with regard to DACA thus far suggest a guy who realizes his mouth wrote a check that is a lot more difficult to cash in the real world than it was in the Hannity-addled black-and-white universe where he was living before. Remember, this was the central issue of his campaign, but he sent Jeff Sessions out to revoke Obama's policy and charged Congress with coming up with a new one.

He was always a fraud. Now he's shown himself to be a coward. He's exactly what the mainstream branch of the Republican Party feared he was.

Oh god the contortions to try to make Trump something that what he very obviously is.

Obviously his calls to lynch the Central Park 5 even after they were found innocent was part of his subtle criticism on criminal justice in America

Just come to our local ICE office and fill out our "acceptance of promise of non-action" forms.

Oops, silly us, we gave you an "admission of guilt and waiver of all appeal rights" form by mistake. Just proceed to this room in the back where we can sort this out. Your family can wait here in the lobby.

"Oh, with that signature you also just purchased a house in Oaxaca at an incredible, wonderful 17.9 percent interest rate!"

I was just about to post yesterday that there's a non-zero chance he completely changes his position on everything and tries to switch parties after a 2018 debacle.

I'd be excited to see if a President could make it to five percent approval ratings.
