Jemele's response was not only weak and ineffective, her resort to a cultural stereotype is pathetic

    It's biblical!

"When Joram saw Jehu, he said, "Is it peace, Jehu?"
And he answered, "What peace, so long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?" (2 Kings 9:22)

    And it's literary!

    Painter: "Y'are a dog."
Apemantus: "Thy mother's of my generation. What's she, if I be a dog?"
(Act 1, Scene 1 of Timon of Athens)

Jeff Pearlman doesn't want to talk to Jemele Hill about Jemele Hill being the target of "online nastiness."

Jeff Pearlman, I am guessing, wants to use Jemele Hill as a conduit to talk about Jeff Pearlman being the target of "online nastiness."

I like Pearlman. Pearlman has helped me out when I sought advice, and I am grateful. I like Pearlman's work, for the most part. I have defended Pearlman's work here.

But, my God, is he the second-most sensitive person in the business or what? The guy writes Kitty Kelly-style sports bios in which he doggedly ferrets out athletes' dirty laundry out for all the world to see, but he's been holding a grudge against this place for years for mildly and fairly criticizing his work at some point.

P.S. At no point was Jemele Hill remotely close to being "one of America's best columnists."

This matches my experience and opinion almost word for word.

When it comes to actual sports and how they are played, her and Pearlman both have a meatball's understanding and insight. They are essentially sports talk radio callers who can type a sentence.

(Not that Pearlman even pretends that's his bag. But he gets out over his skies when he tries to/has to go there.)

That could be said about 95% of the non print sports media. She's not better or worse than many loud mouth sports opinionators on TV and radio like Bayless, Cowherd Stephen A, Bomani ...
