You're wrong about this...and here's why: because, like typefitter, not everyone reads everything on this board. I'm almost never on the "Anything Goes" side of SJ.com. I see references and crossthreads all the time about stuff there, and I have no idea what it means. That's one reason.

Another is that not everyone is determined to have encyclopedic knowledge about everyone here. I had no idea (until recently) that there are at least three married couple spawned from SJ. I have no idea which posters continually re-appeared as "new" posters. Someone told me The Good Doctor had something like 7 different names. I had no clue -- and we couldn't stand each other. Yawn, Tom Petty, Whitman -- apparently they had multiple versions of themselves. I had no idea.

There is a certain level of effort that is required to seriously know the "people" on this board. Not everyone does it. So, I'd believe it's possible not to know -- if you didn't read certain threads.

Thank God you're still with us, buddy. @Stoney was worried that you'd been driven out of here like cattle on a death drive.

If I've met someone in real life, I can keep track. Because then there's a name and a face and a voice and everything like that. I can remember dooley years after he last posted because I met him. (In fact, when he walked into the room I was like, "That must be dooley.") Same with IJAG or Clubber_Slang or pastor or hockeybeat. But if I haven't met somebody, and they aren't especially distinctive in their posting history, then I'll probably blur them in with the years-long tire fire that is sj.com.

I knew of one of the marriages. I just found out last week that someone else had kids with someone on here. It was told to me as though it were common knowledge. I had no idea.

He thinks he's a fucking grandmaster. It's like watching an 8-year-old play chess when they think all the pieces move the same.

Three marriages would just about account for all the women posting these days, right?

(I have no idea who anyone is, what their relationships with anyone are and if there’s another board they may be posting on. Every so often I’m amazed how much deeper the experience here is for some people.)

    It's gotta be a gift . . . or a curse.

There are people who recognize posting styles and know all reincarnations of people here. I can't detect shit.

I never left. I just breeze in and out of the Politics thread like the proverbial zephyr. Come in, comment on something for a while, and then breeze out when the inevitable personal pissing match begins or the topic shifts. The thread moves so fast that if you leave for a couple of hours it's five or six pages later and who the hell remembers or cares enough to sift back through that many posts to pick up a conversation that was probably careening off a cliff like a '78 Pinto with bad brakes?

Frankly, I think this is the most I've ever been discussed in an SJ thread. I've been a member here for 12 years, have more than 22,000 posts, and have always felt like I've maintained a fair degree of anonymity. I can probably count on one hand the number of posters who know who I am, and that's mostly because I worked with them and they happened to figure it out. I'm hardly one of the board's all-stars. Call me the Marty Jannetty of SJ.com. I provide some quality moments, but I'm mostly there to get beat on for 10 minutes before making the hot tag to someone else and let them look good.

I don't think I've ever had a genuine prolonged beef with another poster, and there's a reason for that. It's just not worth more than a little bit of my time. We all seem to get along on other threads. Then we step into this one and irritate the hell out of each other. So, when one of my posts is called "the dumbest in SJ.com history" -- something I find highly dubious considering some of the stuff that's been posted here over the years, most likely including some things by the folks saying and agreeing with that statement -- it's irksome but I'm able to let it go eventually. I'll go cuddle with the wife, play video games, go to bed, get dinner, actually do some work ... you get the idea. Much like a city bus, another shouting match will be along shortly. My attention span for those things is about an hour. After that it's just mentally exhausting to keep rehashing the same points, and to try and keep up with the way the argument inevitably gets twisted around like a pretzel. I'd rather pet my dog and feel good about life.
