The cracker vote is fading away in Florida. The state hasn't been Deep South for decades.

North of 4 and west from about 2 miles from 95.
And while the Gulf Coast from Tampa South isn’t cracker, it’s fairly Midwest conservative.

The core of Republican strength in Florida are retirees in the Villages and the Ft. Myers-Naples area (this supports your contention). Rural central and Panhandle second. Core of Democratic strength is Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Palm Beach. Orlando second. Tampa Bay area and Jacksonville are battlegrounds. Steve Schale, a Florida Democratic operative, has given us the following fun fact. Since 1992, Florida has cast over 52 million votes in presidential elections. The total separating the two parties in that total is about 20,000.

When you see Donald J. Trump followed by a stupid blue checkmark, stop reading.
Who cares about his spoken thoughts on anything.
What he does is another matter.

Gwen Graham, Bob's daughter, was uninspiring
    Phillip Levine peaked too early
But yeah, I'm sure DeSantis is happy

I think one reason is that Florida evidently does not do runoffs. So Gillum gets 24% of the voets and wins the whole thing. I assume the other Democratic gubernatorial candidates were more moderate. If there had been a runoff Gillum probably loses.

I think Gillum gets crushed because of the FBI investigation going at Tallahassee City Hall. Even if he is not implicated if there are indictments it is a problem.

If DeSantis was any closer to Trump - he'd already be indicted.
