Pffft. I'll see your Montana Slim and raise you Ranger Doug.

Bonus: Woodie Paul, who plays fiddle for Riders in the Sky, has a degree in physics from MIT. Seriously. And Too Slim, on the right, is wearing his favorite Cac-Tie.

Ranger Doug, the Hero of American Youth. Those guys are getting a little long in the tooth but they sure were fun to watch back in the day.

Here's a live version. Three different guys on the yodels ...

Vince Gill is incredible. Saw him in concert with his wife not long before I left Richmond. What a voice indeed. Loved that show. Afterward, my wife went to a lot of effort to make me a CD of the songs they did, in order. Then she kicked me to the curb but I don't think they were related.

A friend in Nashville got to know Gill some years back and says he's a hell of a good guy, too.

Does he still do anything with the Time Jumpers? Saw them at The Birchmere a few years ago with my son and it was a great show. They had an old guy with them and he did a yodeling tune that was a lot of fun.

I need a live-music-in-Nashville trip very soon. Who is in?

This week is actually an amazing time to be in Nashville. It's the Americana Fest -- Americana bands playing in clubs and bars and venues all over town. One wristband gets you into all the shows. I did it a few years ago -- saw sets by Dwight Yoakam, Kasey Chambers, John Paul White, The Bottle Rockets, Green River Ordnance, Grant Lee Phillips, and a few others. May do it again next year.

Shit. Let me know. I'd come in for that in a heartbeat. I think I saw Asleep at the Wheel was there?

First, let me apologize for snapping at you. Uncalled for.

Here are some of the folks I think have the better voices in country music:

    Jim Reeves
    Glen Campbell
    Patsy Cline
    Loretta Lynn
    Conway Twitty
    Charley Pride
    George Jones
    Waylon Jennings
    Marty Robbins
    Charlie Rich
    Tennessee Ernie Ford
    Vince Gill
