I read an interesting essay that stated the Dixie Chicks banishment was the fuel that led to the bro country of the last 15 years where the main "controversy" is whether a road is gravel or dirt and you're chugging beer down by a lake or a river.

Bro-country is little more than pop music of the last decade with an underlying banjo and a twangy baritone (or tenor, if you're trying to draft off Keith Urban's heat).

The Dixie Chicks thing wasn't really about patriotism. It was about putting mouthy women in their place. The country music establishment has a long-standing history of extreme double standards in how male and female artists are treated. (I suppose the world at large does too, but country music especially.)

Highly recommend the podcast "Cocaine and Rhinestones," especially the episodes about "Harper Valley P.T.A."

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an across-the-board hater of “new country” (of which bro-country is a distinct subset). The genre contains some great songs. I guess I’m just wise to the formula and roll my eyes at times. In WWE terms, I’m a sharp.

The music is still good. The lyrics are insipid and pander to people who don't even live the life they think they're living.

It seems like the arguments questioning whether or not 3,000 people really died in Puerto Rico are gaining traction. They question the methodology.
Why not just question the Holocaust while they're at it?
These people are just as bad as Holocaust deniers.
