How much of this do the suckers and deadenders and cultists believe?

    All? Some? None?

And what should the press do about it?

Dean Baquet is on record saying he doesn't like the word lie and doesn't want it in the paper. So the Times is proactively refusing to tell the truth.

When we're all in the press gulag, we can remind the guards we engaged in 'best practices.'

Kavanaugh is the kind of guy that got molested by the priests but bought the line that it was because he was special. He actually enjoyed being a little bitch for the priests. He has spent the rest of life chasing that high. His biggest regret is that he got too old for them. He cant understand why they didn’t want him anymore. The reverence for the authority figure, the drive to please the authority figure and the joy in hurting others so they know his pain, but can’t. Because he’s special and they are not.

Yep. I’ll give the Republicans this. They’re ruthless and their tactics are working. That’s bad for the country.

You forgot to include @doctorquant, @QYFW, and @Songbird, so at least there’s a fuller cadre of voices representing a wider spectrum than you find here these days.

Songbird isn't gone. Neither is LTL.

Dickie and doctorquant have been actually losses for this place. QYFY comes and goes and he is welcome to take his broad brush with him. YF's departure was a gift. We could certainly use some intelligent, reasonable conservatives here. Sadly, what we had was YF.

I never suggested the republic won't survive. But I believe great damage has been done to the court because there will now be deep and persistent doubt about its legitimacy. That will make its work harder.

I don't think Scalia was partisan, or at least not anywhere near to the degree Kavanaugh is. Scalia was a conservative who used his considerable intellect to advance conservative legal theory, and that often overlapped with his party's goals. But I can't point to a single incident or opinion where I think his actions were based on advancing Republicans as opposed to his view of conservative jurisprudence. I feel much the same about Ginsburg on the left, who Republicans have disingenuously been bleating about as the same type of partisan operative as Kavanaugh to try to diffuse what they know is a problem with his appointment. His opening statement the other day about these attacks coming from the Clinton machine revealed in bare terms how deep down that well he's gone. That alone makes me believe he is unfit for the court, let alone the numerous times he lied in earlier hearings about his involvement in political activities on behalf of the GW Bush administration.

Apparently owning the libs is more important than our democratic institutions. There are so many conservative lawyers Trump could have appointed who would have been unassailable. He chose Kavanaugh.

    Exactly.

    Scalia was a conservative.

    Kavanaugh is a party hack.
