Wholly unsurprising. It again raises the question of where the money went, though.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, I say. Maybe a little concerned, too.

    Both?

Americans cannot afford "housing, childcare, healthcare, transportation . . . and a cellphone."

Yeah, everything else was a piece of cake. But my $129 phone and $35 monthly plan pushed us over the edge.

    It’s a crucial communication device.

As for the concept of “can’t afford” my sense is they do “afford” them but go into debt because of it. Which I believe. Got a niece whose family has been twice to Disney World. Has 20 grand in credit card debt too.

A lot of it comes down to people being so ashamed of a small life that they have to live bigger than they can. And they’re ashamed not just because of income disparity, but because our communities and culture do an increasingly lousy job of creating meaning outside of commercialism and self-fulfillment. Media says “never be fulfilled, never be happy, there is always something and someone better.”

It’s making whole chunks of America poor, trying to outrun the shame. Shame keeps Americans from voting their economic self-interest, too.

Yes, I will add that while it might seem a cellphone is a luxury device at first glance, the lack of one has a very real impact on one's existence at this point.
