A former co-worker contracted ALS and was dead in less than two years. He had a young teenage daughter at the time.

That's kinda a pass-fail situation. Either you can do it or you can't. The guidance of the coach should consist of telling her, "take two steps and kick it."

    Using a four-step run-up, probably 25
percent of your kicks will be blocked. Probably more when teams realize you're so slow getting it off and start gunning directly for blocks.

No NFL team is going to spend 30 seconds trying to train somebody to do what 90 percent of high school kickers can do in a breeze.

I really don't think there is anything exceptional about Loyd that couldn't be said about any national team member - male or female. That said - seems like a good move for a team once they've fallen out of contention (why don't teams with good kickers trade them to contenders needing help in that department down the stretch?). Like closers in baseball.

My only concern, what if he she to make a tackle, or pick up a ball on a fumbled snap?

She's 37. Where was this idea 10 years ago?

Same thing that happens to any small kicker not used to playing high-impact full-contact sports.

Of course, in the last generation, the diminutive-sized foreign exchange soccer players have disappeared from football.
Now, kickers are almost always pretty big strong athletes who've been kicking since age 10, and many of whom were perfectly capable of playing field positions in HS.

Some 25 years ago, one of the high schools I covered had a kid who'd been born in Africa and emigrated to the US in early grade school. By his senior season he was fully "Americanized."

He was an all state soccer player who played football as a kicker only. He was 6-1, 185 and a state qualifier in the 100 and 200 meters.
The football coach agreed with the soccer coach the kid should kick only. Both football and soccer were state ranked teams.

He solved the problem of what to do on kickoffs by kicking all his kickoffs about 20 yards out of the end zone.

The kid's senior year, the soccer team lost in regionals while the football team was still alive in the playoffs.

The kid told the football coach he wanted to play both ways, offense and defense, plus kicking. So he caught two TD passes, made a dozen tackles, and ran a kickoff back for another TD.

I think her old sister might have kicked for Texas State.

I think Helen Hunt's Oscar for "As Good As It Gets" was a make-good for the shameful snubbing of her starring role in "Quarterback Princess."

CBS's tv-movies back in the day - man - hate to say it, but they really kind of nailed McMinnville. (Though Maeda actually played in a town near Corvallis). Extra points for Daphne Zuniga and Jonna Lee.
