    I'm not sure about this.

Mark Twain wrote a great deal of his early journalism in first person. As did Hunter Thompson, as did Tom Wolfe, as did Joan Didion. Etc., etc.

None of whom, presumably, had Boomer parents.

No strike clauses are pretty common in union contracts.

Pretty common? Across the spectrum of that unions? No. They exist.

We’re defining journalism somewhat loosely with at one least one of these.

At any rate, the rise of “I’ve lived five years with,” “I lost my,” “On being a,” “I’m a recovering,” “How X saved my,” personal essays is tied to the endless newshole the Internet provides. There weren’t impassioned mom blogs about what trembling messages they give their kids about guns in America, or the president, 30 years ago.

Well, defining them as journalists is sort of the thing.

Save me the 'technology is altering cultural discussion' bit

Very odd to hear David Folkenflik talking about Deadspin (and mentioning Adequate Man and the Haters Guide to the Williams-Sonoma Catalog) on NPR yesterday.

Why? It has. You wouldn't have read them otherwise.

Hell, if the you're the kind to buy into it, we have the president we do because of fake ads that are possible on social media but never would have made the air on TV.

That's as much about the technology of journaling - the 'web log' - as anything else. Digital / social media created a tidal wave of self-expression. But 30 years ago, every one of the titles you suggest would have been submitted to the "My Story" slot in your local paper, or run as a letter to the editor - and later reprinted in The Readers' Digest.

The big difference is that now we all have access to all of it.

1st person storytelling isn't necessarily a function of failed parenting.

The confessional style of writing is as old as the craft.

I saw a story yesterday where Wagner admitted she doesn't have a family or mortgage.

No-strike clauses in union contracts have always been pretty common. Are they often violated? Sure. But they're also very specific: no strike while the contract is in effect.

Which is why so many strikes begin at midnight the day the contract expires.

    No-strike clauses and the IWW

This clause is a part of most contracts between employers and unions, and has been since the 1930s, although it has been common in craft and conservative unions for far before then. I’ve heard that there are some mainstream union contracts in various places that do not include no-strike clauses, but more often than not, they are expected parts of negotiated contracts.
