And because I'm a great admirer of the event, I like the fact that San Jose gave the New York Marathon some play on the front. I can't imagine there were many non-NYC papers -- especially on the West Coast -- that did that.

That, I'm not so crazy about. Simply because I've got to ask if that was one of the six stories that day which would interest the most readers.

But then again, that's news play rather than design...

That doesn't bother me too much, either. It's not like you pushed the Warriors inside to run it on the cover. It's just a promo, and who knows, maybe the story is a great reader on the inside?

I must admit, I didn't look at the page when I wrote that. I thought that might have been the bottom story. No, a reefer to that is no biggie.

coming at this late in the game, but wanted to chime in that i think this page was really, really effective.

sure, there's no real hed/visual hierarchy in the nfl package, but the fact that it's so cleanly designed and organized helps it all hang together. final result: three stories get really good play ... no small feat on a 6-story front...

i think it's a great example of knowing the rules well enough to know when (and how) to break them....great stuff.

and craig, it's good to see you on here man. and you're right, this has been a helluva thread so far.

Being out of print for a while, I haven't done much on this thread, but I kinda like the Mercury-News page. A different treatment on a very loaded day.

I wonder if the reverse pyramiding on the Shambles and Gambles headlines was intentional. Hope that's not a dumb question. I thought even that was kind of interesting.

One thought -- what about running the quotable across the top of the page, right underneath the red pagetopper? You could even combine it with a horizontal mug, just to give it an added touch.

I think it might tie the page together even more.

I like the NFL notes package a lot ... you get a lot of information into a nice clean, organized (and space efficient) hole. Especially like the midstate report, with mug of the local guy. I'm not sure about adding a mug to the quote, just for fear of making it a bit busy (i'd hate to lose the local-guy mug as a trade off).

i think some subheds in the notes and injuries packages would help organize those a bit better...

Yeah, I thought about that as soon as I hit "post".

I guess I just have a thing for package toppers. Who knows.

But I like all of the stuff incorporated on this page. It would be a "must read" for me.
