There are a few threads that that run common through the religious zealot voters, calling them evangelical is way too kind for the hateful and dim witted violent mob that they really are. They hide behind a facade of religious-type words to shield them from the oppressive hatred and ugliness that they screech. Moralists? That's like calling Hitler a eugenicist.

The antiabortion, anti-gay existence Party is also the party that supports white male primacy and maintain that women are mere support staff for men. And those men are descendants of English-Scottish-Irish-German “pioneers” as they refer to themselves. It’s not that they/you just oppose gay rights to marry and not be discriminated in the work place. They still believe that gay sex should be illegal. They are so anti-abortion that doctors who perform abortions should be executed and woman who get abortions should be jailed. Maybe executed after they are forced/raped into another pregnancy.

Besides male superiority, racial superiority is a common theme running through their party. It’s still not blatant as in whites are genetically superior, but its blatant in that White/Western-Euro culture is superior. Surely it takes a superior race to develop a superior culture, doesn’t it? Because they are believers in inherent superiority they also believe education is over rated and indoctrinating. Their gut feelings and ‘common-sense’ are the only guidance they need. That’s trump (and Bush Jr.), he’s so inherently smart, that he can make snap decisions and always be right. Why? Inherent intellectual superiority.

Unsurprisingly, they call themselves Christian. Why not, the single greatest and pseudo-religion and political theory in recorded history. 2 thousand years of vague teachings of morality, but more importantly, 2 thousand years of the use of god as the head of a an oppressive political regime that had conquered the majority of the monetary and politicalpower in the world. The fundamental belief is that Jesus Christ lived and died for your sins. Accept him as your Lord and Savior and paradise awaits in Heaven. Unknown how many virgins these Christian men get to rape in heaven for eternity. And what they also slide in is that accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior means you accept his agents on earth, his pastors and those that they anoint, like trump and bush. That is the religion, just do what your told by those that god has touched. Oh, and only tithe to the church, because if you let the government tax you then you will be beholden to the government and not the church. The church wants your money and labor. You dont want your tithes to go to the dirty dark people. Keep it in house. Literally. The church isn’t pooling your money and giving it out as charity. Itpools your money to build pools and houses for the pastors

This primary is odd. It's like the election of Trump made Ds realize America was a lot more racist than they wanted to admit, so they're rallying around those candidates that are closest to Trump - old, white Northeasterners.

Swear to god, I first thought this was about pretty-sure-he's-still–dead Fidel Castro.

That’s politics. Hillary was an establishment progressive democrat. Her stated policies would have been more centrist, but her appointments would have been all progressive, liberal, and dominant minorities (women, blacks and a decent smattering of Hispanics for the group photo) Blacks mostly sat in their hands figuring she’s an easy winner over trump and their lacks of votes (total votes not %) was a message.
The liberals that sat out elected trump, along with the Russians and the rigged votes in a few key states. Now they have 2 choices, trump or anyone but trump. You don’t pry white votes in Michigan, Pa, Wisconsin, Virginia and NC away with a a candidate that doesn’t look like them.

This was touched on in the TV thread, but what I'm about to say more belongs here:
Has anyone seen Live in Front of a Studio Audience? I'm admittedly late to the party on this. ABC did remakes of All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. If you haven't, you need to.
Norman Lear was, and thankfully still is, brilliant. Those shows are nearly 50 years old, and if you change a few names, places, events, they could just as easily been written today.
    1. It's a glowing sentiment to how good Lear's work has held up.
    2. It's a sad condemnation that our society hasn't changed and potentially gotten worse.

The fact that should be noted for the world is WWII vets like Lear and Carl Reiner as so outspoken critics of Trump.

I remember watching all three shows when I was a kid but obviously didn't get the social commentary at the time. I watched specials and was just mind blown.

Caroll O'Connor - who was about as big of a lib as there was in Hollywood - was disgusted that there were people who watched regularly to cheer Archie on - they didn't realize he was satirizing them.

There weren't a lot of people who didn't know that All in the Family was satire. The show never served as a rallying cry for bigots, at least in any great numbers.

A lot of people liked Archie Bunker because he was a lovable fool, not because they were bigots and didn't understand the show was meant to be satire. You'd have to have been living under a rock or have been brain dead to not know who Norman Lear was, or the show's intention. Everyone had an uncle or a neighbor or a dad like Archie, so they got it. Archie was an extreme caricature of that guy, which made for the comedy. He was also sort of a lovable loser. Most people aren't that one dimensional. They could love and hate Archie at the same time.

I don't remember my dad's reaction to Archie. I remember we watched it regularly.
I remember him hating Maude (and later Murphy Brown) with a passion. I didn't get it at the time. I still don't get it, but understand now.
