Might as well promote from within. Any guy from outside the staff is gonna hear how great Rhule was, how much the media liked him, how he said all the right things, etc, etc. No thanks.

So let's say Trump University of Lynchburg matches Baylor's offer for Freeze. Wouldn't they have to do better than that to keep a guy at their independent, Cure Bowl program and away from a Power 5 gig?
Trump University of Lynchburg: no conference affiliation, no chance at anything meaningful.
Baylor: Scandal-scarred place in an unappealing town but remarkably propped up by Big 12 membership that never should have come its way in the first place. Recent history suggests you can win there and maybe make the tournament one day.

Liberty will have tie-ins to a bunch of other different bowls starting next year, similar deal to what BYU has with ESPN. Falwell would not only match it, he'd go over the top, because that school has more cash than it knows what to do with.

Conference affiliation: I'm telling you, don't be surprised if the AAC comes calling, at least to add LU as a football affiliate, though I suspect it would rather go in as an all-sports member, considering how different it is than the rest of the schools in the ASun.

I don't think it makes any sense either, but that school is such an outlier. It has better facilities than some ACC schools at this point, and they truly believe they can buy their way into being Notre Dame. Now I don't believe that, but they do, and they'll pay to see it through.

And then there was the locker room fight that sidelined the starting QB for the bowl game.

I can only imagine what a recruiting weekend is like at that place, and I know as a 17-year-old from a neighboring state, I woulda left for the Greyhound station the first chance I got.

Speaking from experience, having covered that school for 10 years, I think they try to toe the line between the churchy stuff and the normal college kid stuff on recruiting trips. That said, if you want to party and play sports at Liberty, you can. You just have to be smart about it. I can't tell you the amount of times I would be at the bar and see a Liberty football player and have him freak out because he thought I was going to report him to the coaching staff. Not my job, dude. If you're 21 and want to drink, you do you. Now if you get a DUI or get into a fight and get arrested, that's a different story ...

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reporting that Rocky Long will step down as San Diego State head coach and be replaced by OL coach Brady Hoke, who preceded Long at SDSU before leaving for Michigan.

I figured this changeover would happen at some point in the future, but the timing is curious. Also curious is that Long has apparently been seeking out DC openings at other schools.

I've never understood the lack of respect administrations have had for Rocky Long. Asking a coach to make staff changes when he's coming off a 10-3 year and a bowl win? Nine straight winning seasons? 81-38 and 51-20 in conference? I realize he's pushing 70 but wait until the new stadium gets on line and he retires on his own before embarking on a new era.

He’s a fantastic coach. He’ll also likely be the last guy to leave New Mexico with a .500 record.
