I want to say Cobain was late afternoon on like a Wednesday.

I was at a Kroger in Nashville and was told the news by a female cashier, who chuckled in saying, "Can you believe it, that Kurt Cobain guy shot himself to death."

That line "shot himself to death" just hangs with me. Like he'd shot himself multiple times or something.

My grasp of the Nashville neighborhoods is pretty shaky after so much time away -- haven't been back since 2010 -- but I'm pretty sure that one was in Green Hills, like where the Green Hills Mall was/is.

Pass away shouldn't be used at all in journalism, but if it is used, I would think it would be in reference to someone who died peacefully in their sleep or something like that. A violent collision with the side of a mountain hardly fits the description of "pass away."

I learned about Cobain listening to an album-rock radio station.
He had attempted suicide a couple weeks earlier and it had made the news, so it was disappointing but not shocking.

    Now John Lennon was shocking.
