The guy is a freaking billionaire. He could have said "Hey, we're hemorrhaging money. We have to close, but we're going to cover your insurance for the next two months. If you get sick, you're covered." It would cost a lot - but it would be PR gold, and I'd bet a tooth that a smart CPA could write it off his taxes.

Much like automotive repair shops and parts stores, they are part of the transportation infrastructure. That’s why they are considered “essential.”

This is a typical American retail store. The only employees with benefits at typical American retail stores are the store manager and 2-3 assistant managers. You can't "cover the insurance" for the cashier or replenisher who don't have insurance to cover in the first place. Sure the CEO could have said it --- and it would have taken about 30 minutes for somebody to do a story about how "Fake Christian CEO promises to cover employees' insurance --- but 90% of employees don't have any insurance to cover, so it won't be costing him anything!''

And FWIW, the guy has given $500 million to charity and is part of the Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge, so he'll wind up giving about $3.5 billion to charity before he dies.

No, they’re guilty of all of those.

They’d be getting ripped on for staying open, but at least there would be some understanding of them doing so. Not as much as Mom & Pop Bike Shop, who need every nickel they can get because some deity likes arts and crafts more than bicycles and hasn’t blessed them with as much success as Hobby Lobby (go back and read the letter again). But at least it would be understandable, if not liked.

They would be getting ripped on majorly for how they treat their employees even if they weren’t religious. The religion aspect is an aggravating factor.
