Will COVID-19 be the needle that finally bursts the sports bubble?

Sports are no more or less meaningless than art or music or poetry.

In a utilitarian sense, they might be useless, but we fill them with meaning and derive meaning from them.

The difference is that he’s basing his guess on applicable and very recent precedent. China rescinded some of its restrictions and has seen an uptick in cases.
Think about this: Wouldn’t you be reticent about suggesting that all will be well if you know that one positive test among players league-wide might trigger another shutdown?
I’d rather hear caution than Dabo’s blind-faith platitudes.

Newsom also said two weeks ago he didn't expect schools to restart and that came down on Wednesday. He may be looking at projections for infections and may see July/August will have significant enough new exposures to limit large crowds preventing 40,000-plus people from gathering at the start of the NFL season.

Is it really absurd to suggest that having 80,000 people congregate — and hug in moments of greatness for their team — might be impractical before a vaccine is administered for the first time?

    BYM-
Swinney doesn't even realize the party's over - somebody's going to have to tell the dipshit when the curtain lifts from this.

The guy's so dumb, so wholly unprepared by his life for a time like this, that he's thinking about football.

There are going to be societal benefits from this, as there were many in the aftermath of the 1347-51 Black Death,
and the relegation of college football to an activity that will be forced to pay for itself will hopefully be one of them.

And good luck with getting your billion dollar stadium paid for by taxpayers.

There will be a golden age for the arts and the sciences when this is over ... medical innovation, fortification of the constitutional order, a happy interval.

We're going to identify very quickly the people who bring nothing to the table. This is already starting to happen in Italy.

I drove past a public course this afternoon and saw a guy teeing up his ball, so I guess they're essential here too... although the state wide shelter in place didn't hit till 5 pm today, so maybe not.

It seriously pissed me off as a baseball fan when he wrote it, but Robert Heinlein (Science Fiction Grandmaster, if you don't know him) nailed it when he referred to the World Series as "a commercially induced surrogate interest". When it really gets right down to nut cutting time, it's true. We can get along without it just fine. We enjoy sports, and we miss them... but we'll keep right on breathing in and out if they never come back.

Before a vaccine? That could be 18 months.

Playing the games on TV is not absurd.

First, China lied its ass off. The WaPo story today alone proves that.

Second, I appreciate your question the way you asked it. If one positive test shuts down the NFL, that speaks to my concerns about our addiction to panic.
