The work of Grant Wahl is literally the No. 1 reason why I clicked over to Sports Illustrated's website and subscribed to the print product for most of the last couple of decades

    Response from Maven:

And yes, it IS about the Tweet. Does anyone have a screenshot?

Editing again, this time to add Grant Wahl's response tweet -- though not the original comment.

I'm sure this is going to be greatly received! As well as it did for Deadspin's owners!

Grant has no one to blame but himself here. It's not like he was taking a 30% reduction from making 60K.

Maybe they only know of Sports Illustrated through "Wayne's World 2," and are under the mistaken impression that they bought a company that primarily created football phones and Stanley Cup recap videos.

... and now I want to root for nobody in this dispute.

Wahl can go back to making clippers because everybody needs a haircut and the stockpile of clippers is low. (crossthread)

I like Wahl a lot and think he's incredible. And I think Maven is nothing short of ridiculous. But let's say Grant's base salary was at $200K (since he says it wasn't 350K) and it gets chopped by 30 percent. He's still at $140K! It's not worth it at all to gripe about it on Twitter. Just wait until you find an opening somewhere else and make the jump.

Moral of the story: Never tweet.

Better moral: Don't shit where you eat. For him to go public (or at least Twitter) with ripping his employer, then play the "Woe is me" game with the tweet that he got fired and got no severance, is pretty shitty, too.

Neither side is draping themselves in glory here. Wahl made mistakes, and Maven/SI showed they are scum of the earth.

Wahl's initial tweets guaranteed that this would happen. Limited sympathy here.

But anyone reading that memo and coming away with a "Oh my god, how could HE complain about a 30% cut"... get the fuck outta here with that.

I probably should not weigh in here, BUT.
    Here's what I know:

*Grant Wahl is one of the best guys you could meet. I felt that way when I met him more than 20 years ago, when the idea of me ever working at SI was laughable. He greeted me upon my hire with genuine enthusiasm and I'm far from the only one there who felt this way about him.

*But while being a nice guy and all that is great, production counts. And he was PROLIFIC. He wrote a lot and wrote well. He did frequent podcasts. When he was at a game, he'd file a very good three thoughts piece literally as the teams were shaking hands. Then he'd come back later with a strong column and, many times, a follow-up for the next day. He's as connected and respected as anyone covering soccer.

Grant stopped by the office late one night after returning from a trip. No doubt wanted to get home as soon as he could. A young member of my team, who was fairly new, came up to me and said oh wow, there's Grant. He's always been one of my favorites. I walked over and shared this with Grant and he came over and introduced himself and spent a very long time talking to her and getting to know her.

A big-time talent and I never saw a single ounce of big time in him.

If I made up an all-star team of people I've worked with over the years, he'd be on it without question.
