    That 14.7 percent headline number makes things sound way better than they are.

    In the report this morning, the employment-to-population ratio dropped to 51.3 percent. It's the closest thing to an honest number they report in that there are no adjustments, no ascribing motivations to anyone, it's just a simple ratio of the civilian labor force currently employed to the total working-age population.

    That means that 48.7 percent of the population is not working at the moment, if you believe the BLS.
