I'm tired of governors hauling out the same tired line: "I trust the citizens to do the right thing."

No, Bozo, that's what put your sorry-ass state in the shape it is.

-- Two weeks ago a friend invited us to dinner at a restaurant on July 17. He asked if I thought I'd feel comfortable going out by then. I laughed. Now, I'm not laughing anymore.

-- My daughter brought her computer home and has been working on our kitchen table since this started in March. Her company is trying to get everybody back into the office, but is being cautious. Now, she is invited to a pool party by her group of friends. One guy's birthday is July 4, so there's a double celebration. But one couple lives in Arizona and my kid is certain they don't follow quarantine regulations. Daughter's boyfriend currently lives with his grandparents, who are both in their upper 70s. I'm 68, wife is 63. Daughter is wrestling over whether to go to the party. She is concerned for us, and especially the grandparents. But she also is worried that if they reassemble the office, she doesn't want to be the one who brings the virus back in and forces them to close down again. One of the big fears is taking a step forward, then having to take two steps back. It looks like that might have happened here in California.

-- My 50-year high school reunion has been postponed, probably until September 2021. We were scheduled for Sept. 12, 2020, and decided to target July 4 as our date to decide on whether to postpone. But it was obvious 3 weeks ago that the Covid effect would prevent people from coming to the reunion, even if it cleared up in the next month or two (it won't). So we made the postponement decision early in June. Everybody is breathing easier about this now.

I nearly changed that, but thought, EFF-IT. Nobody has challenged one of my posts in at least 8 minutes, go for it. So I teed that up for you.

Here in Indiana, we have a Republican governor and we're on Phase 4 of a five-phase reopening plan that to me seemed silly when it was launched. Yet, by strategy or by dumb luck, Indiana is faring just fine while so many other states are sliding the wrong way or just royally f*cked. Maybe that changes here in a couple weeks or a month, I can go out and see plenty of folks without masks and ignored social distancing. But for now it's OK. I also feel like I won't be venturing over the state line for quite a while.

I will be. Literally. My wife is finishing up sewing my new mask. It's longer top to bottom and tucks up under my chin well, covers my beard and gets a good seal. It's tapered at the sides where the ties are so that it does not bunch up as you cinch it tight. The cut around the nose at the top is also tapered. She now runs a seam pocket from the top at the nose to the bottom under the chin, and slides a heavy plastic zip tie into the pocket. This forms an arc and stiffens the mask, holds it off of my face. Pockets inside for filter media - I use sterile 4x4's cut to size. Throw those out every few days, wash the mask.

    We adapt.

Santa Cruz County throws in the towel. Hell, it's been foggy all week anyway.

So we have family, well it's my sister-in-law's family so not actually blood relation but we do tons of stuff with them, that have been acting like none of this is even a thing. They had a baby shower just last week with zero precautions other than it looks like it took place outside. Complete with group photo with 85-year-old grandma right in the middle. Much like this photo. My wife and I have just face palmed every time they do this stuff and it has been fairly often. We've turned down several in the next few weeks. It's one of those can't happen to me or us cases until it does. Then it devastates a family and everyone is sad. I just don't get why take the risk right now.

Sometimes you have to say no.

I feel for the dad, who is probably going to lose both parents because of this nonsense.
