More like running the immortal draw play on 3rd/24, almost getting thrown for another 10 yard loss, but breaking three tackles to gain one yard.

This is David Brooks being pretty good.

Opinion | The National Humiliation We Need

If you don’t breathe the spirit of the nation, if you don’t have a fierce sense of belonging to each other, you’re not going to sacrifice for the common good. We’re confronted with a succession of wicked problems and it turns out we’re not even capable of putting on a friggin’ mask.

In the days leading up to this July 4 weekend, I’ve been thinking about a scene in “Good Will Hunting.” We’ve seen Will perform all these mathematical feats and flights of verbal brilliance, but the Robin Williams character sits him down on a park bench and confronts him with a rot at the core of his character. “I look at you; I don’t see an intelligent, confident man; I see a cocky, scared” kid.

The last three years have been like that Robin Williams speech for a whole nation — an intervention, a truth-telling. I had hopes that the crisis would bring us together, but it’s made everything harder and worse. And now I worry less about populism or radical wokeness than about a pervasive loss of national faith.

The only character in GWH comparable to any current public figure is Casey Affleck, the kid brother who jacks off into a baseball glove.

That's amazing. I've been getting more and more miffed at some friends who are upset that we need to shutdown the economy as a result of this. One is the head of a credit union and has been railing about the impact on the economy since this whole thing started. Got me thinking, so many people are "patriots in name only." They want to wave a flag, beat their chests about how much this country is the best, how we are the bastion of freedom in a corrupt and frightening world and we have the best everything. But when the bill comes due, no one wants to pay. Need to fight for freedom? Well those troops I love so much will take care of that and I will thank them by clapping at a football game. Need to prop up your neighbor to help the community? Well those lazy SOBs should just get a job. Need to engage in a shared sacrifice to help the economy and the nation thrive? No, people (not me, I'm working from home) need to work (for my benefit). No one wants to step up and be patriots in any meaningful way. They just want to play one on TV.
