Our neighbor tested negative for the virus, so we're safe. For now.

Whatever happened to that talking point?

Oh yeah, it went away with the “it’s just the flu” catchphrase.

Will their opening ignite a countrywide resurgence?

It depends on your definition of reopen. I do think we will see many schools open part time so they can limit capacity. If you mean being at full capacity five days per week, you may be right.

You make a good point about substitute teachers. Many of the people who do that are retired. They do it for a little extra money and they like being able to choose which days they work. Most of those subs won't choose to work at all this fall.

It is so easy to see what's gonna happen in late August. Some school districts will open Trump-style. Some will try to muddle through with combination in-class and remote learning. Others won't open, or at least will postpone opening. The Trump-style districts will encounter mass rebellion from teachers and many parents. The muddlers will muddle for awhile, but inevitably, at one or more of them, a teacher, student, or staff member will get the virus and those schools will shut down. Not just schools, whole districts. By Columbus Day, American education from pre-K to grad school will be in chaos headed towards collapse.

It went away when Brazil hit #2 for infections in late summer there.
