Richest doesn't mean anything. Other than perhaps it makes us the world's most wasteful country. And just because we Biff Tannen ourselves into being the world leader doesn't mean we are "supposed" to be.

Then why does the UK have so many more deaths per capita?

BTW, Japan has a much "older" population than Italy, and Germany is nipping on Italy's heels. Neither of those countries approaches Italy in COVID-19 numbers.

The US sucks at this because it is like the Titanic trying to maneuver around the iceberg. Too big and can't corner worth a damn. And it has 50 officers manning the boilers, each offering different instructions.

Even granting it took the world by surprise, since March no developed country's response has been as hapless as ours.

As posted elsewhere, we crashed the economy with a series of half-assed local "lockdowns" - and still didn't interrupt transmission of the virus.

This isn't a monofactorial thing. My post didn't say it was. I pointed out that Italy was susceptible when it became a hotspot BECAUSE it is a nation of old people. That wasn't me saying, "If you are an aging population, you are going to become a hotspot."

Japan wasn't an early hotspot. Italy was. Japan already had a culture of wearing masks that has likely made a difference there.

But this is you again shifting the conversation to some monfactorial thing that you are going to harp on to disregard the point.

The point of my post was that in addition to factors that made Italy very susceptible, Italy got hit first. ... before everyone had the handle on the virus that they do now.

The U.S. has no such excuse. We watched what happened in Italy, watched what happened in the Northeast, had infectious diseases experts pleading with Americans to not be dumbasses. ... and a large number of people in this country acted like dumbasses (and even continue to act like dumbasses).

Saying that is like a ship and an iceberg is nonsensical. The ship was in the Pacific Ocean. The iceberg was in the Atlantic Ocean. And now it's. ... how could the ship have avoided the iceberg?

There's a variety of posts going around FB right now about how India or some other country cured the virus (big talking point from these people that it's been cured when viruses do not ever ever get cured; they get treated and they get vaccinated against, anyway) because of hydroxychloroquine and the entire US medical community is lying so they make more money. And the truth is the countries that have gotten past this have used draconian shut down measures, either because they're authoritarian governments and can do what they want or the people cooperated. It's maddening.

This is why the notion of a libruhl media monolith is absurd. Sinclair owns 200 tv stations. That’s one in every market in the country. It is also time to retire the idea that all ideas are equally valid and that libruhl media damage the country. Trumpist media is literally advocating ideas that will get people killed. Somehow, covering athletes’ silent protests is now equated with the dangerous rubbish that Trumpism continues to spout. Stop. Immediately.

"Congress" requires both the House and Senate to act. The Senate has a Kentucky Fried Chicken blocking any and everything that's logical. Ain't no way, Mr. Kristol.

Is there some arcane House rule that requires Gym Jordan to be on every committee that holds a televised hearing?

People wanted government to run like a business and that's exactly how Trump runs his.

If the business is Trump University, maybe.
