Where I'm from, they sure don't go in your mouth.

I like Law, but he's flat wrong about Thom's dad. Not for nothing is he in the Hall of Fame.

Marty Brennaman landed a great job with a team already in full ascent. He might have had to work for that but his son didn't.

No profession is as rife with nepotism as broadcasting, IMO.

Certainly, if he's Thom Smith his first job out of college probably isn't Cincinnati TV. Not arguing with that. The parenthetical (who was also quite terrible at the same job) could not be further from the truth.

Joe and Marty were exceptional. Thom should be fired.

I get what you're saying, but I listened to Marty a lot when I was a younger person and was never under the assumption he was a future Frick winner.

Many big-league communities think they have the best announcer around. And if the guy is there 40 years then they feel there's a greater case to be made.

From what I could tell, this happened not on the Reds’ TV broadcast, but MLB’s online subscription service. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong.) That’s added a new level to “being aware” of your microphone. For some reason, the online feeds are available on your devices where TV feeds are not. A couple of years ago, we went to commercial during a Vancouver/Toronto game. Our commentators trashed some of the Canucks' strategy, and people listening on GameCentre (that's NHL's online service) heard it all.

In 2020, it's best to assume that anything you say anywhere can be picked up by somebody. For a broadcaster, you'd better be cautious when singing in the shower.

Somebody had a great point. Let's not lose the sight of the actual issue. Hot mike or not, you just don't use that word in any reasonable form or fashion.

This is as much on Marty as Thom.

Many times, these longtime PbP announcers are who are “legendary” are just compilers, like Biggio.

Denny Matthews has no business in the HOF. The Royals merely kept him around for 51 years.
