The great SNL casts didn't use cue cards, did they?
I'm talking about the early first years and the Phil Hartman years.

At least in recent years, the speculation has been that they've had to rely way more on the cue cards because they have to re-write the sketches way more, especially the political ones, because of the much more competitive atmosphere.

'SNL' cancels appearance by country singer Morgan Wallen for COVID safety violations

Morgan Wallen will not perform this weekend on “Saturday Night Live.”

The mullet-wearing country star whose hit “7 Summers” recently set records for a country track on streaming services said in an Instagram video posted Wednesday that he’d been disinvited by the NBC sketch-comedy series, which had booked him for Saturday’s episode alongside host Bill Burr, after clips surfaced on social media showing him partying in tightly packed crowds without a mask.

Lorne will order rewrites and writers will try to punch up jokes between dress rehearsal earlier Saturday and the live broadcast. Given the number of lines and skits and last-second changes, it's understandable they use them.

I'm pretty sure they've used them since the beginning. Zappa mentioned reading off the cue cards during his monologue when he hosted in 1978.

Who the hell is Morgan Wallen? Obviously never been in my kitchen.

Lorne Michaels is on "Today" this morning, and they're going to reveal who the fill-in guest will be. The "smart" money is probably on Paul Simon or Paul McCartney. For a humorous anecdote about this, check out Conan O'Brien's podcast episode from 2020 with Tom Hanks, where they note that Lorne will just casually talk about "my friend Paul," and you can't tell which one he's talking about for far longer than it should take. "Well, he was talking about the difficulties he was having with his musical partner..."

Jack White should be a harmless enough musical guest. Haven't kept up with him to know if he's got any new stuff out.

Looked it up - Goldblum has only hosted the show twice. Feels like that number should be higher, but then again, he hasn't been #1 on the call sheet for many things.
