At The Buffalo News, design matters. Given the competition for readers -- print and digital -- design is one of the best ways to make our news and information easy to use and one of the best ways to make our publications stand out.

To help our design take the next step, we are seeking a talented lead sports designer for our creative team. The ideal candidate will thrive on bold and sophisticated design with a complete understanding of typographic voice. He or she must be able to display strong journalistic judgment and instincts of a news editor when handling daily sections, previews and special projects. There will also be opportunities to work on news and features pages and projects as time and interest allows. The designer must be able to adapt to the ebb and flow of news while working with design and content editors. The job requires night and weekend work.

The Buffalo News is annually honored for its high level of visual journalism. Our work is consistently recognized as among the best in the world by the Society for News Design, as well as in multiple national, state and regional competitions. The News placed in the Top 10 for the sixth year in a row last year at SND’s Best of News Design competition, receiving 42 awards, including a Judges Special Recognition award for consistent high-impact storytelling through sports design.

From the SND judges: “This medium-circulation newsroom sustains an ambitious level of sports design week in and week out. The design and photo departments collaborate on coverage unmatched at most papers in their size. The work is clearly appreciated in a market like Buffalo where sports is the main topic of conversation on any given Monday. This paper covered the Super Bowl better than the cities that had teams in it!”

Candidates should have a mastery of InDesign and Photoshop, familiarity with Illustrator and must have digital design skills or be committed to quickly developing them.

We are currently working remotely, so immediate relocation is not necessary, though that could change once we return to the newsroom.

The Buffalo News is the leading media outlet for Western New York, and our newsroom is the largest in the state outside New York City. Buffalo lies on the eastern shores of Lake Erie, a short drive from Niagara Falls, Toronto and numerous outdoor activities in Western New York. The city is the hub of New York’s second-largest metropolitan area, sporting vibrant arts, food and nightlife scenes and two major universities.

If interested, please send a resume, cover letter and up to 10 of your best published clips to recruiter@buffnews.com.

I’d have given a lot back in the day for this but now that I’m back in management. Still a good job for someone who wants their work seen.
