But weren’t Republican the liberal good guys back then and we needed them to fight the racist democrats in the South?

They became states over a decade after the end of Reconstruction. At best by then you could call the Republicans the Slightly Less Horrible About Racism party.

Six of North Dakota's eight most recent senators have been Democrats.

The state of Washington D.C. wouldn't elect a Republican senator in any of our lifetimes.

North Dakota will not elect a Democrat senator in the next 50 years. Anyone even remotely liberal in that state has left for Denver, Minneapolis or someplace else.

North Dakota will also not elect a senator as smart, or as effective, as Byron Dorgan or Kent Conrad in the next 50 years.

    Nor should it.
Your boy from Wisconsin, Ron Johnson, says the vaccines should be limited to the elderly and others of most extreme need.

Alaska got admitted to the union because it was thought it would be a Democratic counterbalance to the Republican stronghold of Hawaii. Things can change.

But if the GOP remains openly hostile to multiracial representative democracy, then yes it is going to continue a long losing streak within DC. And if it keeps alienating college-educated whites, its built-in advantage for midterm elections becomes much more shaky.
